Israël rappelle son ambassadeur au VenezuelaJERUSALEM, 7 août 2006 (AFP) © 2006 AFP Israël a décidé lundi de rappeler son ambassadeur au Venezuela en raison "des positions unilatérales" adoptées par Caracas sur le conflit en cours au Liban entre Israël et le Hezbollah chiite libanais, a indiqué le ministère israélien des Affaires étrangères. "Nous avons décidé de rappeler notre ambassadeur en consultations en raison des positions unilatérales du gouvernement de Caracas sur le Proche-Orient et du fait que le Venezuela a décidé de se rapprocher des éléments extrémistes de la région comme le président iranien qui, soir et matin, affirme qu'Israël doit disparaître", a déclaré à l'AFP, Mark Regev, le porte-parole de la diplomatie israélienne. Le président vénézuélien Hugo Chavez exprimant son "indignation après le bombardement du peuple du Liban et du peuple de Palestine" avait annoncé le 4 août le rappel de son ambassadeur en Israël. "J'ai ordonné de rappeler notre ambassadeur en Israël", avait déclaré M. Chavez, estimant que les troupes israéliennes bombardaient des "innocents". Au cours d'un discours prononcé à Vela de Coro, à 300 km à l'ouest de Caracas, il s'en était également pris au gouvernement des Etats-Unis "qui a interdit au Conseil de sécurité (des Nations unies) de prendre des mesures pour empêcher le génocide qu'Israël est en train de commettre contre le peuple de Palestine et le peuple du Liban". Le ministre israélien de la Justice Haïm Ramon avait fustigé les déclarations du président vénézuélien évoquant sa "personnalité particulière" dans une déclaration à la radio publique. "Le même président Chavez n'est en revanche nullement gêné pour soutenir le président iranien Mahmoud Ahmadinejad qui proclame que la véritable solution au conflit entre Israël et le Hezbollah libanais est la destruction de l'Etat juif", avait-il déclaré en référence à une récente déclaration faite par le chef d'Etat iranien. Le 3 août, le président Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, dont le pays soutient le Hezbollah, avait affirmé que "le véritable remède au conflit (au Liban) est l'élimination" d'Israël.

The Anti-Defamation League has condemned as "outrageous" statements by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez comparing Israel's military offensive against Hezbollah to the actions of Hitler during the Holocaust, and said Chavez' remarks could be used to justify violence against Jews in Venezuela."Clearly, President Chavez needs a reality check when it comes to the Middle East conflict," said Anti-Defamation League National Director Abraham H. Foxman.

"It is outrageous for him to suggest that Israel, the home of the Jewish people, is behaving like Nazis. Need we remind Mr. Chavez that the State of Israel, which arose out of the ashes of the Holocaust, once again is fighting to defend itself against an implacable enemy whose goal is the destruction of the Jewish State?"Israel Monday recalled its ambassador to Caracas following Chavez' comments.In an interview with the Qatar-based satellite station Al Jazeera, Mr. Chavez said Israel's military action was an "unjustified aggression that is being carried out in the style of Hitler, in a fascist fashion." On August 3, Chavez announced that he had withdrawn Venezuela's ambassador to Israel in protest over the war in Lebanon.In a letter to Chavez, the ADL said "We are deeply concerned that statements demonizing Israel and anti-Semitism cloaked in anti-Zionist terms may be used by others to justify violence against Jews, wherever they live, including in your own country of Venezuela."On Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said We have recalled our ambassador to Caracas for consultations.""We are concerned at the attitude of Venezuela," Regev said. "They have allied themselves with the most extreme elements in the region."Regev said Israel did not appreciate Chavez's allying himself with views similar to those of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has called for the destruction of Israel."We have a Venezuelan president who embraces the Iranian leader who just a couple of days ago called for Israel to be wiped off the map," said Regev.
